Some months ago, I decided to bring together a team of freelance translators and professionals of all areas, all foreigners here in Brazil, in order to offer premium quality in translations to my clients. After translation, each text is proofread by all members of the team, without extra cost to the client, assuring a more precise and effective final translation.
My hope is that translators share information and experiences, and that potential clients find a translator that fits their expectations and needs.
In light of the frightening number of bad translations we have received to proofread, I have decided to list some of the basic requirements to assure a quality translation.
1. Only hire a translator that speaks the target language (to which you wish to translate your text) at native level, rather than translators that only speak the target language fluently. This mistake is common in Brazil and has been the most frequent cause of badly translated work.
2. Ask for a sample text or examples of previous translations and, if possible, help the translator create a short glossary of the most common terms used in the specific area of the text.
3. A good translator always maintains contact with the client, asks lots of questions and/or requests reference material. A good translator does not send e-mails with spelling mistakes and communicates with the client in a professional manner.
